History

The American Curl is the result of a genetic mutation which was first appeared in a stray black kitten with long and curly hair named Shulamith in 1981. This kitty had ears turned in curl shape this strange trait attracted breeders towards her hence a new breed was born.

Shulamith was first found by Joe and Grace Luga. They brought Shulamith back to their house in California because of her strange ears turned backward. After some time Shulamith had a new pair of four kittens. Two of those kittens had the same pattern of ears that their mother had hence a new breed was formed named American Curl.

After this incident, Shulamith and her kittens attracted people towards them. She also attracted many breeders and persons who want to exhibit them. By 1983 they had begun many breeding programs to preserve those characteristics. Roy Robinson a geneticist explained that the ear-curling gene was autosomal dominant. This means that even one copy of the gene would have ears curled backward.

This kitten becomes very famous in little time. In 1987 the international cat association recognized American Curl as a new breed and in 1993 the cat Fanciers association accepted this kitty as a new breed.

Personality

American Curl is a friendly and gentle cat breed having people loving personality. She loves to play with children. This kitten is moderately smart, active and curious. She will follow you to feed her curiosity about what are you doing. This kitty isn't of a talkative and bossy nature like some other breeds. When you arrive back to her after work she will greet you by bumping her head. Male and female of this breed are equally active.

Health

American kitty
American Breed
American curl is generally a healthy kitten but like other cat breeds she can develop many diseases but she is not known to any genetic disease. The main problem that she faces is related to her ears. She has narrow ear canals which can cause ear infections and wax buildup.
One other problem that she can develop is obesity. Try to manage her weight in terms to provide her good health. I suggest you take handwritten guarantee from any breeder if you are buying this kitten.

Grooming

It is important to groom shorthaired kitty to keep her coat beautiful. Whereas we must have to comb longhaired curl to protect her from mats and tangles.
The other grooming needed is nail trimming which must be done every week. It is also compulsory to brush her teeth to provide her good health and fresh breath but this can be done by vet-approved pet toothpaste. Try to adept these groomings early so that your kitten accept it easily.
To check ear infaction smell her ear for any bad smell. Bad smell and ear redness is a good indicator of ear infection. Clean hear ears if they look dirty. Use only those cleanser which is approved by your veterinarian. Never force or fold ear into other positions because this can harm her cartilage.
