The American shorthair is a powerful cat so she is full of masculine nature with a broad chest. Similarly, her legs are strong and thin. She remains always ready to catch mice and rats hence. The American shorthair looks very heavy and strong. Her looks indicate her heavyweight and she has fully developed body parts. Her coat is thick and dense. During winter the thickness and length of her coat increase. Her coat provides her protection. She can attach herself to every person in a family. This kitty didn't need hourly attention. She can play alone and she is a good companion for single people's. She can create a toy from anything.

The American shorthair is a thick and muscular cat hence it is important to control her proper nutrition. American shorthair can develop Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is a disease which leads to thickening of heart muscles. An echocardiogram can confirm whether a cat is suffering from HCM or not. Every shorthair cat can develop HCM so, don't fall for false promises. American shorthair must be tested for HCM before breeding I suggest you not to buy a cat whose parents were not checked for HCM.

Another problem is obesity to maintain this problem provide her proper meal and nutrition. To keep her healthy manage her weight and try to give her less oily and fatty food items.

History

The American shorthair is considered as native to the United States. The ancestor of this breed was originated in Europe. The British Shorthair or Domestic shorthair is considered as one parent of this breed.

The first recorded breeding of American shorthair took place in 1904. This kitty was a working cat. She was used to controlling the population of rodents under control. She was bred to be hardy, healthy and strong. This cat used to live outdoor so, her thick coat was developed to prevent her from cold.

American shorthair must be brushed weekly with a stainless steel comb or a rubber curry brush hence her coat remains shiny, beautiful and healthy. The other grooming required is ear cleaning, nail cutting and teeth cleaning. Use only vet-approved toothpaste to clean teeth. Finally, this cat is best for single peoples and used as protection against mice and rats.
